Jean Batten Building Auckland 02
Jean Batten Building, Auckland
Project Info
The former Jean Batten Building in the Auckland CBD was designed in 1937 by Government Architect John Mair and completed in 1942 to house government departmental offices. It is a Category 1 listed building with Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga.

DPA Architects were involved in the restoration of the building's Streamlined Moderne façades and also acted as heritage consultants during its integration into a new high-rise commercial building on the corner of Queen and Shortland streets. The project was the recipient of a 2010 Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects Auckland Architecture Award for Heritage.

The project comprised the integration of the street facades of the historic Jean Batten building into a new commercial development. The three facades of the building were retained and fully restored. A new office building extending through to Queen Street was then constructed behind, but set back from the retained facades. Although the new tower was predominantly sheathed in glass, a more solid section adjacent to the Jean Batten Building was designed to act as a ‘reconciliation wall' between the new and existing buildings.
